SAJE ALEPH, WAW, YA
Centerpiece, bread or fruit basket
Design: Karen Chekerdjian & Raya Khalaf, 2010
50 (∅) × 6 (h) cm
Designed especially for an exhibition on Islamic Art called The Future of Tradition - The Tradition of Future at Munich’s Haus der Kunst, these shallow platters, shaped rather like an inverted Lebanese saje griddle, can be used or simply admired.
The carefully scored surface is left blank in places to form the three classical Arabic vowels. The use of a contemporary typeface – created in collaboration with graphic designer Raya Khalaf - rather than calligraphy, subverts and refreshes the tradition of decorative plateware in the Middle East.
